A real speakeasy that earns the word, with a mixologist who treats his craft like a chef treats his kitchen. The drinks back up the atmosphere — nothing is sugar-bombed, citrus is fresh, and every glass has clearly been thought about. Book it.
Most "speakeasies" in the Algarve are theme bars. Dark wood, fake gas lamps, a velvet rope outside a building nobody was ever hiding alcohol in. Forbidden Door is the actual thing. Small, intimate, a menu organised by base spirit, and a bartender who looks at you when you order like he's about to take it personally if you don't try the chocolate one.
The drinks back up the atmosphere. Nothing is sugar-bombed. Citrus is fresh. Spirits are good. The yuzu cocktail tastes like someone thought about it for a long time, which is the whole point.
I've sent six different friends here over the past year. Every single one came back asking how to get to Lagos again.
If you don't know what you want, tell the bartender what spirit you like and a flavour you're into. They'll build something. That's the whole point of the menu structure.
One small room. Dim. Oldies-leaning soundtrack at a volume that lets you talk. Maybe 30 seats. The bar is the centrepiece, which is correct.
Don't expect a view. Don't expect a scene. This is a place for the drink and the person across from you.
In Lagos old town, two minutes' walk from Praça Gil Eanes. If you're staying at the marina, it's a 15-minute walk or a €4 Bolt. Cards are accepted. Reservations through their site or by walking past in the afternoon.
The line that comes up over and over is "cosy escape." That's accurate. People also keep mentioning Katharina behind the bar by name, which tells you what you need to know about how the place is run.
