The best bars in Quarteira are on the beachfront promenade, the prices are local, and the crowd is more Portuguese than any resort town on this coast. Quarteira is where you drink with a sea view for half of what Vilamoura charges — and Vilamoura is ten minutes away when you want it.

Quarteira is the town Vilamoura was built next to. While Vilamoura is a purpose-built marina resort, Quarteira is a working Portuguese fishing town that happens to have one of the best beachfront promenades in the Algarve — Avenida Infante de Sagres, a long palm-lined seafront where locals take their evening walk and every second building has a terrace pointing at the Atlantic.
That's the bar scene: not cocktail temples, but seafront terraces with cold beer at €2.50, decent wine, imperial pours, and a sunset you'd pay triple to see from a marina-front table up the road. The town fills with Portuguese families in August, retired northern Europeans in winter, and almost never with the stag-party crowd.
The obvious and correct choice. Walk the seafront from the fish market end towards Vilamoura and pick any terrace that's busy with locals. The bars here change names more often than they change character — expect café-bars that do everything from morning coffee to midnight beer, sangria by the jug, and front-row sunset seats that never need a reservation.
One street back from the sea, prices drop again and the crowd goes fully Portuguese. The area around the municipal market has tasca-style bars where a glass of wine is €1.50–2 and nobody is in a hurry. Go for the pre-dinner hour when the market-side grills fire up — grilled sardines and a cold Sagres is the whole point of this town.
Stay or drink in Quarteira if: you want sea-view drinks at local prices, a genuinely Portuguese evening atmosphere, and a beach town that stays alive in winter. You'll spend half of what Vilamoura costs.
Head to Vilamoura if: you want craft cocktails — The Argo is the only award-level cocktail bar on this stretch of coast — superyacht-watching, clubs, and a polished marina scene. It's 3km up the beach: a 5–10 minute Bolt or a 35-minute seafront walk that's a pleasure in itself at sunset.
The smart play is doing both: sunset beers on the Quarteira promenade, then a Bolt to the marina for a proper cocktail.
From Faro airport it's about 20 minutes by car (€20–25 in a transfer or Bolt). Buses run from Faro and Albufeira. If you're day-tripping from elsewhere on the Algarve, park near the Calçadão at the western end and walk the promenade — parking in the town centre in August is a blood sport.
Boat trips, dolphin watching and coastal tours leave from Vilamoura marina, ten minutes away.
