Half the Algarve bar scene locks up from October. The other half is often better in winter — quieter, more local, no queues, and run by people who actually want to be there. These are the bars that stay open when the tourists leave, and the towns worth visiting for a winter drink.
Lagos has a substantial expat and digital-nomad population that keeps the old town's better bars viable through winter, and Forbidden Door is the best of them. The speakeasy format actually works better off-season — fewer people trying to find it, more room at the bar. The cocktail quality doesn't change with the calendar.
Open daily from 6pm to 4am regardless of season. Off the tourist strip which means its business doesn't evaporate when the beach crowd leaves — it serves a local and year-round resident crowd. The most reliable late-night option on the western Algarve in both summer and winter.
Albufeira's old town away from the strip has a quiet year-round bar scene, and Sal Rosa is the best of it. Off the tourist drag completely, which means the winter crowd is locals rather than holidaymakers. Good cocktails, relaxed atmosphere, the Albufeira that doesn't make the brochures.
Faro is a working Portuguese city — its bar scene doesn't depend on tourism, which means it doesn't disappear in October. LAB Terrace in the old town is one of the better wine-focused bars in the Algarve, and genuinely more pleasant in winter when the city runs at its own pace rather than a tourist one.
Tavira is one of the best towns in Portugal to visit in winter — quiet, beautiful, mostly local. Arcada is on the main square and stays open through winter with reduced hours. Praça da República on a January evening with a properly made cocktail is one of the better Algarve experiences you're not reading about anywhere else.
Sky Bar Carvoeiro closes seasonally — don't make a trip for it outside April to October. Most of the Praia da Rocha cliff-top strip (Outro Bar, Mandala Lounge) reduces significantly after summer. Levels Carvoeiro and Carvoeiro's Cocktail Garden maintain reduced winter hours but are worth checking directly before a visit.
The golden rule: city-centre bars (Lagos old town, Faro old town, Albufeira old town, Tavira square) survive winter better than beach-facing and cliff-top bars. Plan around towns rather than specific venues when visiting October–April.
December to February in the Algarve: 15–18°C daytime, rarely below 10°C at night, uncrowded beaches, half the accommodation prices, and the bar experience you actually came for — local people, no queue, a bartender who has time to talk about what's in your glass. The weather is not a problem. The atmosphere is better.
