On Tavira's most beautiful square, with a terrace facing the Gilão river and half its crowd made up of locals who've been coming for years. The best cocktail bar east of Faro — and one of the more pleasant places to spend an evening in the Algarve.
Most towns in the east Algarve don't have a genuinely good cocktail bar. They have bars that serve cocktails — and there's a difference. Arcada is the exception. It's been on Tavira's main square long enough to have a regular crowd, and the drinks are made with the kind of care that makes that crowd keep coming back.
The location is as good as it gets in Tavira. Praça da República is the town's central square — sixteenth-century church on one side, the Gilão river a few steps in front of you, palm trees, tiles, and the last of the evening light making everything look better than it already is. The terrace puts you right in the middle of it.
The cocktail menu is extensive for a town this size. Portuguese ingredients turn up where they make sense — ginjinha, local honey, aromatic herbs. The staff know the menu. That sounds like a low bar and in the Algarve it isn't.
Service can slow down when the square fills up in peak summer. If you're arriving on a Saturday in August expecting to be served immediately, adjust expectations. The bar is popular and the terrace is finite.
It's also worth noting that Arcada is more bar-with-a-good-cocktail-list than specialist cocktail bar. Forbidden Door in Lagos it is not. But that's not a failure — it's a different thing serving a different purpose, and it does that thing very well.
Praça da República is the centre of Tavira — everything walks to it. If you're in the old town, you're five minutes away. Parking on the edge of the historic centre and walking in is the standard approach.
