Cocktail Club Main Square Terrace Walk-in

Arcada Cocktail Club, Tavira:
The East Algarve's Best Cocktail Bar

📍 Praça da República 8, Tavira ⏰ Tue–Sun 10am–midnight (Fri–Sat till 2am) 💶 €€ · Cocktails €10–14 ⭐ 4.4 / 5 (520 reviews)

On Tavira's most beautiful square, with a terrace facing the Gilão river and half its crowd made up of locals who've been coming for years. The best cocktail bar east of Faro — and one of the more pleasant places to spend an evening in the Algarve.

Why I'd send you here

Most towns in the east Algarve don't have a genuinely good cocktail bar. They have bars that serve cocktails — and there's a difference. Arcada is the exception. It's been on Tavira's main square long enough to have a regular crowd, and the drinks are made with the kind of care that makes that crowd keep coming back.

The location is as good as it gets in Tavira. Praça da República is the town's central square — sixteenth-century church on one side, the Gilão river a few steps in front of you, palm trees, tiles, and the last of the evening light making everything look better than it already is. The terrace puts you right in the middle of it.

The cocktail menu is extensive for a town this size. Portuguese ingredients turn up where they make sense — ginjinha, local honey, aromatic herbs. The staff know the menu. That sounds like a low bar and in the Algarve it isn't.

The honest catch

Service can slow down when the square fills up in peak summer. If you're arriving on a Saturday in August expecting to be served immediately, adjust expectations. The bar is popular and the terrace is finite.

It's also worth noting that Arcada is more bar-with-a-good-cocktail-list than specialist cocktail bar. Forbidden Door in Lagos it is not. But that's not a failure — it's a different thing serving a different purpose, and it does that thing very well.

What to order

  • 1
    House signature with local spirits
Ask what's made with Portuguese spirits or local ingredients. The bartenders will usually have a recommendation. This is where the menu distinguishes itself from anywhere else.
  • 2
    Spritz or Aperol variations
For an afternoon drink watching the square. They're made properly here — the right ratio, not a glass of orange with a splash of Aperol.
  • 3
    Ginjinha cocktail
If it's on the menu, order it. The Portuguese sour cherry liqueur used well in a cocktail is one of those combinations that feels obvious once you've tried it.

Who it's for

  • Cocktails on a beautiful square? Unambiguously yes. This is the move.
  • Local atmosphere? Yes — meaningfully mixed crowd, not tourist-heavy.
  • Cheap drinks? Reasonable — cheaper than the resort towns.
  • Late night? Fri–Sat till 2am. Good for a late second drink.
  • Open in winter? Yes. The square is beautiful in the quiet months.

How to get there

Praça da República is the centre of Tavira — everything walks to it. If you're in the old town, you're five minutes away. Parking on the edge of the historic centre and walking in is the standard approach.
